PITTSBURGH_ As a changing climate, plastics in oceans, and food waste threaten people and planet, some Catholic sisters are working to raise awareness and reverse trends. Standup Sisters: Green Habits 2 on March 11, features several short films, and expert interviews, about women who preach what’s been called a “green gospel.”
“Catholic sisters have been de facto conservationists in America for centuries. They’ve tended farms to feed themselves and the poor,” says Jennifer Szweda Jordan, producer of Standup Sisters–a project of Unabridged Press. “Many sisters still promote environmental stewardship in their lives and ministries.”
This event will be held at the Center for Media Innovation at Point Park University at 7 pm Monday, March 11. It’s free with registration at Eventbrite, and will be live-streamed through Unabridged Press’ Facebook page and available after the event on YouTube. This is the fourth annual iteration of Standup Sisters, held during National Catholic Sisters Week and Women’s History Month.
Sr. Lyn Szymkiewicz, of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden, is featured in one segment. She’s a beekeeper, and the brainchild behind her community’s Earth Tones Ministry that procures eggs and harvests vegetables for food pantries, and produces honey.
Event includes live in-studio conversations with:
- Sr. Sally Witt, a Sister of St. Joseph of Baden and author of A Hidden Spirit: The History of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit of the Diocese of Pittsburgh.
- Reid Frazier, co-host of the Trump on Earth podcast, produced in Pittsburgh by The Allegheny Front (airing on 90.5 FM-WESA) and reporter for StateImpact Pennsylvania.
Point Park University, in downtown Pittsburgh, offers degrees in environmental studies and environmental journalism. This event is supported by National Catholic Sisters Week, which takes place March 8-14.
